Designing for connection:
What a simple apron taught me about design assumptions
I began this project with a simple request, create a virtual space where associates can pull up a blank apron and customize it. As a Home Depot associate myself, I believed the apron was a symbol of self expression and belonging. But through my research, I discovered that most associates didn't feel that same connection at all. My Virtual Apron became a study in how our assumptions as designers can be a far cry from the real user need even if its rooted in personal experience.
What started as a project about personalization turned into a lesson in perspective, empathy and the importance of listening beyond what we think we already know.
